A test to create a simple 3D environment for a real world object. The car was spun round on a mirror, and a road created within After Effects was rotated to match the movement. The masking was left loose as I didn't think a clean-up was worth it for this test (if the effect looked half convincing it would be worthwhile to reshoot with greenscreen).
The car is Shockblast.

Currently in pre-production by Tirzitis Entertainment, "Threads of Destiny" is the first in a planned trilogy of films.
For this teaser I was asked to work on six shots, replacing greenscreen with the required scenery. The shots in order are: - Kicking the Stormtrooper
- Stormtrooper firing
- Man being shot
- Punching the Stormtrooper
- Grabbing the Stormtrooper
- Firing at camera

James Bond meets Star Wars in this explosive action thriller from Next Horizon Films. What if there was more to Ronald Reagan's program than what the public was told, and the Star Wars technology was developed? When it is stolen, CIA agents Ryan Davis and Kate Park are sent to recover the technology. Opposing them is the evil Shane Veers, who will stop at nothing to bring about the destruction of the United States.
I was responsible for creating the rain effects for the agent battle. For each shot I separated foreground and background elements, applying different strengths of rain to both (objects in the foreground would have less rain falling in front of them than objects in the background).
In an attempt to integrate the rain a little better, I added ripples (a generated noise pattern) on the floor, again masking out foreground elements.
Unfortunately time was against me, and I believe more could be done to improve the effect - maybe next time.

A short film written and directed by Brian Finifter of Riddle Players Productions.
Injured Stormtrooper is another Star Wars fan film, the second for Riddle Players Production. Its concept originated out of the question of why it always seems that all stormtroopers' casualties are apparently fatal. In contrast to combat in the real world, wounded soldiers typically outnumber those killed by a great deal. But never, apparently, in the Star Wars universe. Injured Stormtrooper explores the idea of what would happen if a stormtrooper were simply wounded, and how his comrades might react to the situation.
Unfortunately, time ran out during production and shooting began on unfinished sets. I was asked to clean up the set, digitally remove seams in the walls, add new flooring, keypads and other details. You can take a look at exactly how much changed by watching the comparison video below. To finish, laser effects and explosions were added by Markus Zimmerman.

I have been trying to understand tracking a little better, and this is a small test that started as a tracking exercise.
The original footage (from Revenge of the Sith) was first stabilised to remove the slow zoom. A clean background plate was then patched together from a variety of frames so that when the heads were removed there wouldn't be a hole in the background. Next the heads were removed, and new heads shot. The new heads were then tracked to the footage and composited over the new background to fit the scene. To finish the zoom was added again by scaling up the completed composition.
I'm reasonably pleased with this as a test, not perfect, but a start!

MY entry to the CEMRIAC Autumn Festival 2005. Unfortunatley it wasn't as succesful as Known Enemy but I'm pleased with it all the same.
Greenscreen and miniatures were used to create the sense of scale whilst the robot costume was left over from Star Wars 1937.
This film was edited to go with a different track, but copyright clearance was not obtained in time for the festival. A huge thank you to Caiaphas for helping with the music at the last minute!
Fire effects from Detonation Films.

Creating the look of Sin City (based from the trailers at least) mixed with a bit of the Matrix. The music is from The Matrix Revolutions (The Trainman Cometh - Juno Reactor and Don Davis).
UPDATE: If you would like to learn more about this effect, there is a walkthrough written here.

Apparently you're nobody in effects untill you've done a lightsaber - so here's my attempt! The saber is made using a variation of Ryan Wieber's method so that the saber has a trail. In addition to the saber, there are some smoke effects, wall slicing and a robotic clone.

This video was pieced together from a 30 minute set as an experiment. The sound was taken from the cameras rather than the sound desk, because of this it is not of high quality.
UPDATE: A second gig was filmed, this time with the correct audio. A DVD has since been made for the band.

My first real attempt at making a short film using the cloning techniques. This was an entry in a local film competition, designed to showcase special effects. It's heavily influenced from the Matrix universe, but not actually from the Matrix universe (if that makes sense?) Some effects include,
- Cloning
- Digital tilting of the 'camera'
- Explosions and shattering effects
- Morphing
The gun was from a toy shop, I don't think it looks too bad considering!
UPDATE: Winner CEMRIAC Autumn Festival 2004, 60-Second Competition! (Audience Vote)

An ambush! This was a short test to see if blood splatters could be effectively added in post (no bloody mess to clean up), along with cloning and artificial camera movement.
UPDATE: If you would like to learn more about this effect, there is a tutorial written here.

This was a brief sequel to the Hallway Ambush video, where the clones are preparing to strike back.
In reality, this was an attempt at mixing a faked pan from within a computer with an actual pan, and it turned out pretty well.
